A stonker is something impressively big, powerful or good — a huge success, a spectacular example of its kind. It is British slang, informal and cheerful, and it is not common; you meet it in newspapers and in speech in Britain, rarely elsewhere, and many British people would call it a bit old-fashioned or blokey. The feeling is admiration mixed with surprise: a goal that flies into the net from thirty metres is a stonker, so is a party that turns out far better than expected. Much more common than the noun is the adjective stonking ('a stonking great house', 'a stonking success'), where the word simply means enormous — and the adverb stonkingly ('stonkingly good'). If you are learning English for exams or work, recognise this word when you read it, but do not build sentences around it; it will sound odd from a non-British speaker, and it belongs to friendly conversation only.
