Stonehenge is a famous ancient monument on Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire, in the south of England: a ring of huge standing stones, some with other stones laid flat across their tops, with a smaller ring inside. It is roughly 4,000-5,000 years old, and nobody knows for certain why it was built. What we do know is that some stones line up with the sunrise at midsummer and the sunset at midwinter, so it clearly had something to do with the seasons and the sky. Beyond that, honest experts say 'probably': probably a burial place, probably a place for ceremonies. You will often hear that the Druids built it. That is almost certainly wrong — the Druids came more than a thousand years later — although modern druids do gather there today, which keeps the story alive. Some of the smaller stones were somehow moved about 250 kilometres from Wales, and how people did that without machines is still argued about. It is a proper noun, so always capital S, no 'the'. For a Taiwanese student it is best known as one of Britain's great tourist sights and a byword for something very old and mysterious.
