If you call someone stolid, you mean they show almost no feeling and no excitement, even at a moment when most people would react — bad news, a shock, a big win. Their face stays the same. The important thing is that this is usually a criticism, or at least not a compliment: it suggests the person is a bit heavy, a bit slow, not really alive inside. Compare it with 'calm', which is a compliment, and 'cool', which sounds admirable. Stolid sounds dull. Though actually, this is one of those words where the speaker's own attitude does a lot of the work. A British writer describing a stolid old farmer may half-admire him — solid, unshaken, not the kind of man who panics. So you sometimes meet it with a warm feeling underneath. But if you are unsure, treat it as disapproving. It is a formal, literary word. Taiwanese students will meet it in reading — novels, exams — far more often than they will ever hear it spoken. It describes a person or a person's face, manner, or expression; it does not describe objects or weather.
