The line of sewing you can see in a piece of cloth or leather — the row of stitches themselves, thought of as one thing. You look at a bag and say 'the stitching is coming undone', meaning the thread has broken and the seam is opening. It is an uncountable noun: you say 'the stitching', not 'a stitching' or 'two stitchings'; if you need to count, count the stitches. People talk about stitching when they are judging how well something is made — neat stitching, double stitching, contrast stitching in a different colour along the edge of jeans — so it comes up a lot in shopping, tailoring, shoes, bags and car seats. The same form also works as the -ing form of the verb stitch ('she was stitching a button on', 'the stitching of the flag took months'), and in a hospital it can mean the sewing up of a wound. But the everyday noun you will meet most is the visible line of thread.
