A set-up: an arrangement made behind your back so that you lose, take the blame, or get far less than you should — and it is made to look fair, which is the sting of it. Two flavours. One is being framed: the evidence was arranged so that you look guilty, and people shout 'it was a stitch-up!' about a trial, a police case, a disciplinary hearing. The other is a deal quietly fixed between people in power, so the result was decided before anyone voted or bid — 'the whole contract was a stitch-up between the two big firms'. Either way somebody is deceived on purpose and the process only pretends to be honest. It is a noun (a stitch-up, with a ) and comes from the verb 'to stitch someone up', which keeps its own shape: 'they stitched me up'. It is strongly informal and strongly British — very common in UK and Irish newspapers, football talk and everyday complaining, and much rarer in America, where people would say a set-up or a frame-up. It carries real anger; it is not a neutral word.

組成stitch + up. 'Stitch' is to sew with needle and thread; 'up' here is the little word that means finished or closed off, as in 'seal up' or 'tie up'. So the picture is of sewing someone up tight — sealing them inside a story they cannot get out of, with all the loose ends neatly sewn shut so the frame looks tidy from outside.
