A place name in the middle of Scotland — both a small old city and the county around it. It sits at the narrow waist of Scotland, at the lowest point where people could cross the River Forth, so for centuries whoever held Stirling held the road between the south and the Highlands. That is why it has a big castle on a rock and why several famous battles were fought beside it. Today it is known mostly for the castle, the tall Wallace Monument on the hill, and its university. As a word for your students, the useful thing is the shape: it is a proper noun, so it always takes a capital S, and it takes no 'the' — you say 'in Stirling', not 'in the Stirling'. You will also meet it as a family name, and inside 'Stirling engine', a kind of engine named after a Scottish minister called Robert Stirling. Say it STIR-ling, two beats.
組成The name is very old and its pieces are Gaelic rather than English. It comes through Middle Scots Stirveling and earlier Strivelin, and most likely goes back to Old Irish sreb 'stream' plus linn 'pool' — roughly 'the stream by the pool', a description of the river crossing the town grew up around. The same name shows up in Old French as Estrivelin and in Middle Welsh as Ystriflin.
