To stink means to smell very bad — a stronger word than just "smell." As a noun, a stink is that bad smell itself, or, in informal talk, a big fuss or complaint about something ("he made a real stink about the price"). You can also say something "stinks" to mean it's unfair or of very poor quality, with no smell involved at all — "this plan stinks."
