A stinger is the sharp, needle-like part on a bee, wasp, scorpion, or similar creature — the part that pushes into your skin and delivers the poison. Americans say stinger; British speakers usually say sting for the same body part, which is a genuine trap, because in American English sting is the act or the wound, not the body part. So an American says "the bee left its stinger in my arm"; a British speaker is more likely to say "its sting."
