- 1
Someone whose job is loading things onto ships and taking things off them — boxes, containers, sacks, cars, anything. Heavy, physical work at a port. It is an old-fashioned word now, and where you hear it depends on where you are: it is more American than British, and in Britain people usually say 'docker' instead. In modern American ports you will also hear 'longshoreman'. There is a fine distinction that people in the shipping business make and nobody else does: a stevedore can mean the company that is hired to load the ship, while the workers are the longshoremen. Outside that trade, though, most people just use stevedore for the worker. You will meet this word mostly in older books, in history, and in stories about port towns and strikes, because loading ships used to need huge crowds of men and now a crane and a few people do it. It can also be a verb — to stevedore a ship — but that is rare and belongs to the trade.
碼頭工人、裝卸工(英式英文多說 docker,美式現在多說 longshoreman)
組成It came into English through Spanish estibador, someone who packs and loads, from Latin stipare, meaning to cram or stuff things in tight. Early English spellings included 'stowadore', because English sailors heard the Spanish word and reshaped it towards their own word 'stow', to pack away. The Latin root is also, distantly, where 'stiff' comes from — both go back to an idea of packing something tight and hard.
