A steroid is a type of chemical the body makes naturally — including hormones like testosterone and cortisone — and also man-made versions of these used as medicine, for example a steroid cream for skin problems or a steroid for asthma. The word is also well known because some athletes illegally take steroids to build muscle and get stronger, so 'on steroids' can even be used as a joke phrase meaning 'a much bigger, more extreme version of something'.
