1. 1

Sterile has two main uses. In medicine and science, it means completely free of and bacteria — doctors use sterile needles and sterile so nothing gets infected. It can also describe a person, animal, or plant that cannot produce babies or seeds. Less commonly, it describes an idea, discussion, or piece of land that produces nothing useful or new — 'a sterile debate' goes nowhere.

    無菌的(醫療);不孕的(生物);(比喻)貧瘠的、空洞的(討論、土地)
