1. 1

Step-by-step describes something that is explained or done one part at a time, in a clear order, with nothing skipped — first this, then this, then this. It is used before a noun: a step-by-step guide, step-by-step instructions, a step-by-step plan, a step-by-step approach.

    Step-by-step describes Step-by-step 形容一件事, that is explained or done被講解、或被做的時候, one part at a time一次只走一小段、 in a clear order順序清清楚楚、 with nothing skipped一步也不跳過—— first this, then this, then this先這個、再這個、然後這個。 It is used before a noun它用在名詞前面: a step-by-step guide一份逐步指南、 step-by-step instructions逐步的操作說明、 a step-by-step plan一個逐步的計畫、 a step-by-step approach一種逐步的做法。

The feeling behind it is kind and careful: it says a beginner can follow along, because each stage is small and comes in the right place. That is why you see it everywhere in the titles of teaching books, recipes, and videos.

The feeling behind it這個字背後的感覺, is kind and careful是親切又仔細: it says它在說 a beginner can follow along新手也跟得上, because因為 each stage is small每一步都很小、 and comes in the right place而且出現在對的位置。 That is why所以 in the titles of teaching books, recipes, and videos在教學書、食譜和影片的標題裡, you see it everywhere你到處看得到它。

There are two slightly different uses. One is about *explaining*: a step-by-step guide walks you through the process. The other is about *doing*: a step-by-step approach to a problem means you work through it gradually rather than trying to fix everything at once — here it can also carry the sense of "slowly and safely".

There are two slightly different uses它有兩種略有不同的用法。 One is about *explaining*一種是在講「解說」: a step-by-step guide一份逐步指南, walks you through the process帶著你把流程走一遍。 The other is about *doing*另一種是在講「做」: a step-by-step approach to a problem對一個問題採取逐步的做法, means意思是 you work through it gradually你一點一點把它處理完, rather than trying to fix everything at once而不是想一次全修好—— here在這裡, it can also carry the sense of它也可以帶著 "slowly and safely"「慢慢來、穩穩來」的意味。

Note the . With them, it goes before a noun. Without them, **step by step** is an adverb phrase and goes after the verb: "He explained it step by step." Both are correct; the are just the writing convention for the before-a-noun position.

Note the hyphens注意連字號。 With them有連字號時, it goes before a noun它放在名詞前。 Without them沒有連字號時, step by step is an adverb phrase step by step 是副詞片語, and goes after the verb放在動詞後面: "He explained it step by step."他一步一步地解釋。 Both are correct兩種都對; the hyphens are just連字號只是 the writing convention for the before-a-noun position放在名詞前那個位置的書寫慣例。
