Step-by-step describes something that is explained or done one part at a time, in a clear order, with nothing skipped — first this, then this, then this. It is used before a noun: a step-by-step guide, step-by-step instructions, a step-by-step plan, a step-by-step approach. The feeling behind it is kind and careful: it says a beginner can follow along, because each stage is small and comes in the right place. That is why you see it everywhere in the titles of teaching books, recipes, and videos. There are two slightly different uses. One is about *explaining*: a step-by-step guide walks you through the process. The other is about *doing*: a step-by-step approach to a problem means you work through it gradually rather than trying to fix everything at once — here it can also carry the sense of "slowly and safely". Note the . With them, it goes before a noun. Without them, **step by step** is an adverb phrase and goes after the verb: "He explained it step by step." Both are correct; the are just the writing convention for the before-a-noun position.
