A stentorian voice is very loud, deep, and strong — the kind that fills a big room with no microphone, and makes everybody stop talking and look up. The word carries more than volume: it suggests power and authority, a voice that sounds important, not a voice that is merely noisy. So you would use it for a general shouting an order, a big-chested singer, a preacher, a headmaster calling across a playground — not for a crying baby or a screaming crowd, even though those are loud too. It is a formal, literary word. You meet it in novels and news writing far more than in conversation; if you said it to a friend, it would sound like you were being funny or grand on purpose. It is used almost only about a voice, or about the way someone speaks — "stentorian tones", "a stentorian shout". People do not normally say a stentorian machine or a stentorian noise.
