A big, heavy beer mug — the classic German kind, with a handle, often made of pottery, often with pictures of villages or hunting scenes, and sometimes with a metal lid on a hinge that you flip open with your thumb. A stein holds a lot: half a litre or a whole litre. English speakers use the word mainly for the German or Bavarian style of mug, especially in connection with Oktoberfest, beer halls, and people bring home from Germany. It is also a collector's word — people collect antique steins. In America it stretches a little further and can mean any large beer mug. If you are drinking beer in a plain glass, that is a glass, not a stein. Pronounced to rhyme with 'nine' (STINE), not 'seen'. Note also that Stein is a very common German and Jewish surname, which is why you meet it as a person's name too.
