In a way that shows strong, steady loyalty — supporting a person, a group, or a belief and not backing down, especially when it would be easier or safer to back down. The word carries time in it: you are not staunchly for something for one afternoon. It suggests you have held that position for years and through pressure. It appears most often with a small set of words — staunchly support, staunchly defend, staunchly oppose, staunchly deny, and before labels like staunchly Catholic, staunchly conservative, staunchly independent. Note that it works for being firmly against something too, not just for. The tone is usually or at least respectful — it says firm, not stubborn. It is a written, word; in speech people are more likely to say "strongly" or "has always backed". The older, more physical meaning of staunch is watertight — a staunch boat let no water in — and you can still feel that in the modern word: a staunch supporter is one that nothing leaks through.
組成staunch + -ly. -ly turns an adjective into an adverb, "in that way". Staunch came through Old French from a word meaning to stop a flow — the same idea as stopping a wound from bleeding — so the original picture is something that holds firm and lets nothing through.
