Stature has two everyday meanings. First, it can simply mean how tall someone is — their height ('a man of small stature'). This use is a little formal; in daily talk people usually just say 'tall' or 'short'. Second, and more common in news or serious writing, stature means how much respect, importance, or reputation a person has because of what they have done ('a scientist of international stature'). This second meaning has nothing to do with height at all — a person can be short but have huge stature in their field.
