A kind of medicine that lowers cholesterol in your blood, taken to cut the risk of a heart attack or a stroke. It is a group name, not one drug: several different medicines belong to the group, and you can spot them because their names all end the same way — atorvastatin, simvastatin, rosuvastatin. That shared ending is exactly why the group is called statins. Doctors give them to people whose cholesterol is high, and usually the person takes one tablet every day for years, often for the rest of their life, so you will hear ordinary people say "I'm on statins" the way they might say "I'm on blood pressure pills." It is worth knowing that these are among the most-prescribed medicines in the world, so the word turns up constantly in health news and in conversation among older people. The plural, statins, is far more common than the singular. it is an ordinary countable noun.
