A tropical fruit with a waxy yellow-green skin. The fruit has ridges running down its sides, so when you cut it across, each slice comes out shaped like a five-pointed star — that is where the name comes from, and it is why you often see it as decoration on a plate or on the edge of a glass. The taste is juicy and mild, somewhere between sour and sweet; some kinds are quite sour and some quite sweet. You eat the skin too, and there is no need to peel it. In English this is one word for the fruit, but you will also meet the older name carambola, especially in books, on shop labels, and in other countries' English. Note the spelling: usually written as one word, sometimes as two (star fruit); both are accepted.
