Starbucks is an American coffee-shop company, started in Seattle in 1971, with shops in most large cities around the world. It is the name of the company and also the name of any one of its shops: 'I work at Starbucks', 'there's a Starbucks on the corner', 'let's meet at the Starbucks near the station'.
Always a capital S. It already ends in -s, so people are unsure what to do with it, and in practice the plural and the singular look the same — 'three Starbucks in one street' is what people say, not 'three Starbuckses'. The is usually written Starbucks' or just left out by .
Because it is everywhere, the name has picked up meaning beyond coffee. Writers use it as a quick sign for global — every city looking alike — or for a comfortable middle-class habit. When someone says 'that's a very Starbucks thing to order', they are talking about a type of person, not about the shop.
組成From the surname Starbuck plus -s, the way many company names are formed. The founders took the name from Starbuck, a character in the American novel Moby-Dick — the first mate on a whaling ship — and the novelist had taken it from a real whaling family from Nantucket. That family name traces back to a place in England called Starbeck. So the name arrived at coffee by way of a novel about whales.
