The behaviour of following and watching someone again and again, over time, in a way that or alarms them — and in many places a crime with that exact name. What counts usually includes waiting outside a person's home, school or office, following them, repeated calls and messages, unwanted gifts, and tracking someone online or through their phone. What makes it stalking rather than ordinary contact is the , the fact that it is unwanted, and that a reasonable person in that situation would feel afraid. Taiwan passed its own law on this in 2021, so the term shows up in news regularly.
The same word is also the plain '-ing' form of the verb: 'He was stalking her for months.' And it keeps the older hunting sense — 'deer stalking' means creeping up on deer, a sport in Britain, with nothing threatening about it.
Online, people say things like 'I've been stalking her account' just to mean looking through someone's posts out of curiosity. Among friends this is normal and harmless. In anything official, or when the person being watched is not in on the joke, use a different word.
組成stalk + -ing. Two things share this shape: the '-ing' that makes a verb form ('he is stalking her'), and the '-ing' that makes a noun naming the activity ('stalking is a crime'). The verb 'stalk' goes back through Middle English to Old English stealcung, from a root about moving warily and quietly — the hunter's approach.
