    A stalactite is the stone that hangs down from the ceiling of a cave. It grows unbelievably slowly: water seeps through the rock above, carrying minerals, hangs in a drop at the ceiling, and leaves a tiny ring of stone behind when it falls. Ring on ring, over thousands of years, a pointed shape reaches down. That is why guides ask you not to touch them — the oil from a hand can stop centuries of growth. The word belongs to geography and science lessons, cave tours, and nature programmes; it is not conversational English, but students meet it early because it appears in textbooks and on school trips to caves. It has a twin, 'stalagmite', which grows up from the floor where those same drops land, and when the two meet after long enough they join into a single column. Note the pronunciation trap: the stress is on the first syllable, STAL-ac-tite, and speakers often put it in the middle instead.

組成From New Latin stalactītēs, from Ancient Greek σταλακτός (stalaktós, 'dripping'), plus the Latin ending -ītēs used in the names of stones and minerals. So the whole word means, roughly, 'the dripping stone' — the name records how it is made, not what it looks like.
