1. 1

SRN stands for State Registered Nurse — a British nursing qualification. A nurse who had finished full training and was entered on the official national register could put the letters after their name: Jane Wu, SRN. It marked the fully trained nurse, as opposed to the SEN (State Nurse), who had done a shorter course and a narrower job. You should know that this is now a historical term: the British system changed in the 1980s, and today's qualification is RN (Registered Nurse), with nurses on the register held by the Nursing and Midwifery Council. So you will meet SRN in older novels, old hospital records, and on the business cards of nurses who trained long ago — not in a job advertisement today. It is always written in capitals and said letter by letter, ess-ar-en.
