Srebrenica is a small town in eastern Bosnia and . In English it is almost never just a place name — saying it is like saying Nanjing or Hiroshima, because the name now stands for what happened there. In July 1995, near the end of the Bosnian war, Bosnian forces took the town and killed more than 8,000 Bosniak (Bosnian Muslim) men and boys. The area had been declared a UN "safe area" and Dutch UN were stationed there, but they were few, lightly armed, and did not stop the killings — which is why the name is also a permanent argument about what international protection is worth. International courts have ruled it genocide. So in English you will meet the word in sentences about failure, shame, and remembering: "the lesson of Srebrenica," "another Srebrenica." Say it carefully; for many people it names their own family's dead.
