    A squid is a sea animal with a long soft tube-shaped body, two side fins, large eyes, and ten arms around its mouth — eight shorter arms and two longer ones it shoots out to catch food. It has no bones. It moves by pulling water in and pushing it out hard, so it shoots backwards, and when it releases black ink and disappears into the cloud. Squid is also the food, and that is how most students meet it: fried squid rings, grilled squid, squid on a stick at a night market. When you talk about the food it is uncountable — we ate squid, not we ate a squid. As an animal it is countable, and here English is strange: the plural is usually squid, the same as the singular (three squid in the tank), though squids exists and is not wrong, especially for different kinds. Do not mix it up with its relatives — an has eight arms and a round soft head, and a is shorter and wider with a hard flat bone inside. food names split these up more finely than English does; English mostly makes do with squid.

組成The origin is not certain. One guess is that sailors changed the word squirt — which fits, because a squid squirts both water and ink. Say that only as a guess; nobody has proved it.
