Weather is squally when the wind keeps arriving in sudden hard bursts, usually with rain or snow thrown into it. The picture is not steady bad weather — it is weather that hits you, stops, and hits you again. A squall itself is one of those bursts: a few minutes of violent wind, often with a wall of rain, then it passes. So 'squally showers' means the rain comes in short attacks with wind behind it, not a gentle all-day drizzle. You will meet this word mostly in weather forecasts, sailing talk, and writing about the sea — it is not a word people use much in ordinary conversation, and a student will most likely see it in a shipping forecast or a novel about a boat. It can also describe a day, a night, or a stretch of sea: 'a squally afternoon', 'squally seas'. Very occasionally someone uses it about a mood or a meeting that keeps blowing up, but that is a writer's stretch, not everyday English.
