sq. is the short written form of square. It does two jobs. First, in measurements: sq. m means square metres, sq. ft means square feet, sq. km means square — the way we measure area, how much floor or land something covers. You will see it in房 , on packaging, and in geography books: "a 90 sq. m apartment", "30 cm sq. tiles". Second, in addresses: Sq. with a capital S is short for Square, the name of an open public place in a city, as in Merrion Sq. or Trafalgar Sq. It is a writing shortcut only — when you read it aloud, you say the whole word "square". The dot after it is optional and often dropped, especially in measurements: both 50 sq m and 50 sq. m are normal.
