The thick white foam that gathers on the top of the sea when it is rough — the bubbles that fly off breaking and blow along the beach. It is a literary word: you meet it in poems, novels and travel writing, almost never in conversation. An ordinary speaker says 'foam' or 'sea foam' or 'the white stuff on the '. It can also be a verb, meaning to froth or foam up ('the water spumed against the rocks'), which is rarer still. Writers reach for it because it sounds like what it means — the 'sp-' and the long 'oo' feel like spray being thrown into the air.
