Lying or sitting with your arms and legs stretched out loosely, in a way that takes up a lot of space and looks careless, tired or relaxed. It is the past form of 'sprawl', but you meet it most often as a description after 'be' or 'lie': 'he was sprawled on the sofa', 'she lay sprawled across the bed'. It carries a picture, not a judgement of character — sometimes it is comfort (a teenager sprawled in front of the TV), sometimes exhaustion (sprawled on the grass after running), and sometimes it is bad news (a body sprawled on the pavement after an accident). It usually goes with a place word: sprawled ON the sofa, ACROSS the seats, OUT on the floor. The related 'sprawl out' means to settle into that position on purpose.
