A sportsperson is someone who plays a sport, especially someone who plays seriously or professionally. It was made on purpose, quite recently, to replace sportsman and sportswoman with one word that works for anybody — so you meet it most in places that need to be neutral: award titles like Sportsperson of the Year, newspaper writing, official announcements. In everyday conversation people usually skip it and say athlete, or name the sport: 'she's a swimmer', 'he plays rugby'. The plural is sportspeople, and it can also mean, more loosely, someone who is good at sports in general. Because it was invented for fairness rather than grown by habit, it still sounds slightly official to many ears, though that is fading as younger people use it without thinking about it.

運動員、運動選手（中性說法，不分男女）。中文本來就沒有性別問題，所以直接說「運動員」就好；重點是英文特地造這個字來取代 sportsman。
