A sporran is the pouch a Scotsman wears at the front of his kilt, hanging from a belt or a chain around the hips. It is made of leather or fur, often with a metal top, and it sits right in the middle, over the front of the kilt. There is a plain practical reason for it: a kilt has no pockets, so the sporran is where the keys, the money and the phone go. Nowadays it is a formal-dress item more than a daily one. You see sporrans at weddings, at Highland games, in pipe bands, and in pictures of Scotland — not on someone popping out for milk. The fancy ones, with long horsehair and silver, are dress sporrans for evening occasions; the plain leather ones are day sporrans. The word is Scottish Gaelic and stays firmly attached to Scotland: outside talk of Scottish dress you will almost never meet it. Because it is a foreign-looking word, students hesitate over the plural, but it is completely regular English — one sporran, two sporrans. The stress is on the first syllable, and it rhymes roughly with 'foreign'.
