A spool is a small round thing, shaped a bit like a wheel with a raised edge on each side, that you wind something long and thin around so it doesn't tangle — thread, cotton, wire, fishing line, film, tape, ribbon. The shape solves a problem: long thin things turn into a mess if you leave them loose, so you give them a stick to wrap around and two walls to keep them tidy. It is also a verb, and it goes both ways. You spool wire onto a drum, and the tape spools off as the machine plays. In American English spool is the ordinary everyday word — a spool of thread — while British speakers more often say a reel of cotton, and use spool for bigger industrial things or for film and tape. Same object, different habit. There is a computer meaning too, and it comes from the same picture: when your document goes to a printer, it is held in a queue and fed out steadily, and that is called spooling — the data is being reeled out at the speed the printer can take. You will see "spooling" on a printer screen; it just means "waiting its turn."
組成Comes from Middle Dutch spoele, a spool, brought into Middle English as spole. It goes back to Proto-Germanic *spolo, and beyond that to a very old root meaning "to split" — the idea of a thin split piece of wood, which is what the first spools were. Its relatives are still visible in German Spule and Dutch spoel, both meaning spool.
