To spend money freely on something you would not normally allow yourself — a good meal, an expensive bag, a nicer hotel. The key is the feeling: the spending is a treat, done on purpose, with a small thrill and often a small guilt. You splurge on something (splurge on dinner), or you just splurge. It is also a noun: 'the trip was a bit of a splurge.' Note the tone, because this is where students go wrong — splurge is friendly, not a criticism. When you say a friend splurged, you are half-teasing and half-approving. If you truly , English gives you waste or blow. Because of that warm tone, advertising loves the word, and shops will tell you to splurge on yourself. The word also stretches beyond money: people splurge on time, on calories, on a whole afternoon doing nothing.
組成Origin uncertain. It may be a blend of splash and surge, and it started out as an American word; the OED treats it as simply a sound-word — a word invented because it sounds like what it means.
