The word is really just the noise written down, which is why it feels playful. English has a whole little family of these water noises, and they differ mostly by size: splish is tiny, splash is the normal everyday one, splosh sounds bigger and heavier, and slosh is liquid moving around inside something. Splosh is much rarer than splash — if a student only learns one, learn splash. Splosh turns up in stories for children, in comics, and when an adult is being deliberately light-hearted. It also works as a noun: 'there was a splosh from the garden.' Though actually, the boundary between splash and splosh is not fixed at all; two speakers will disagree about which one a particular sound was, and neither is wrong.
