A splodge is a big mark of something wet or soft — mud, paint, ink, sauce — with no clean shape at all. The word carries the shape in its sound: something landed, and it spread. 'There was a splodge of ketchup on his shirt.' It can also be a verb: to splodge paint on a wall is to put it on and . This is casual British English; the American form is 'splotch', and 'splodge' will sound British to anyone who hears it.
