A split-level house or room has its floors at different heights in different parts, connected by just a few steps rather than a full staircase. Picture a living room, and then three or four steps up to the area, which is open to the same space — you can see across from one level to the other. It is not two separate floors; it is one floor cut into levels. The word is used mostly by architects, estate agents, and people describing homes, and it points at a particular style of American suburban house that was popular from the 1950s to the 1970s. It can also describe a shop, a restaurant, or an office laid out the same way. The word almost always sits in front of the noun: 'a split-level house', 'a split-level apartment'. You would not normally say 'the house is split-level' — though people do say it, and it sounds fine enough in conversation.
