A splint is a stiff flat piece — wood, plastic, metal, sometimes just a rolled-up magazine in an emergency — tied along a broken arm or leg to hold the bone still while it . Holding it still is the whole idea: a bone can only knit back together if the two ends stay where they are. A splint is not the same as a plaster cast. A cast is wet plaster or wrapped all around the limb and left to harden, and it stays on for weeks; a splint is laid along one side and tied on, so it can be taken off and put back, and it is often what you use first, right where the accident happened, before the person gets to a hospital. Dentists also use the word for a small piece worn over the teeth at night, and a horse can wear one too. As a verb, to splint something means to put a splint on it: 'They splinted his leg before moving him.'
組成A very old Germanic word, from Middle Low German or Middle Dutch, going all the way back to a root meaning 'to split'. That fits what a splint first was: a thin flat piece split off a bigger piece of wood.
