Splashdown is the moment a spacecraft comes back to Earth and lands in the sea, held up by parachutes, instead of coming down on land or on a runway. This is how the American Mercury, Gemini and Apollo missions returned, and how SpaceX capsules return today; Russian spacecraft land on the ground instead. So the word is very much a space-news word — you hear it on television during a live return: 'Splashdown confirmed.' It is a noun, and it comes from the two-word verb 'splash down', so you can also say 'the capsule splashed down in the Pacific'. People sometimes use it loosely and half-jokingly for anything landing hard in water, and 'splashdown' is a popular name for water slides and swimming parks, but the space meaning is the real one. The opposite word, for coming down on land, is 'touchdown'.
