1. 1

A splashback is the piece of wall behind a kitchen sink, a , or a bathroom basin that is covered with tiles, glass, or steel so that water and cooking oil hit it instead of the bare wall — and so you can wipe it clean. It is a building and kitchen-design word: you meet it in shops, in home-improvement programmes, and when someone is fitting a new kitchen. The word is British, Australian, and New Zealand English; in American English people say 'backsplash' for the same thing, so if you read an American website you will see the two halves the other way round. It is countable (a splashback, two splashbacks). You will also see it used for the material itself, not just the area — 'a glass splashback', 'we chose a marble splashback'. There is a second, quite different use in medicine and safety talk, where splashback means liquid bouncing back at you when it hits a surface, but the wall meaning is the common one.

    擋水牆、防濺牆面(廚房流理台或浴室洗手台後面貼磁磚、玻璃的那一片;台灣裝潢通常直接說「壁面磁磚」或「檔水板」)

組成splash(水花濺開)+ back(後面)。字面就是「後面那片擋水花的」——東西的位置和功能都寫在字裡。美式英文把兩半調過來寫成 backsplash,意思一樣。

同家族的字

  • splashthe same word splash — the wall is there to take the splash
  • backsplashthe American form of the very same compound, with the halves swapped
