Spitalfields is a district in the East End of London, just outside the old edge of the City. For a long time its name meant one thing to Londoners: the market. The old Spitalfields Market sold fruit, vegetables and flowers in huge quantities — lorries in the night, traders shouting before dawn — and it ran there for centuries until that wholesale trade moved out to a bigger site in 1991. What sits in the old market buildings now is a different animal: a covered market of clothes stalls, handmade craft, small furniture and design shops, and a lot of food stalls, busiest at the weekend and full of tourists and office workers from the nearby banks. The area itself has a long history of newcomers — French Protestant silk weavers in the 1600s (the tall houses with wide windows to catch the light are still there), then Jewish families, then Bangladeshi families, whose restaurants line nearby Brick Lane. In the last thirty years it has become expensive and fashionable, which older residents have plenty to say about. As a place name it takes no 'the' — you say 'in Spitalfields', not 'in the Spitalfields' — but people do say 'Spitalfields Market' or, loosely, 'the market at Spitalfields'.
