Spim is junk advertising that arrives through an instant-messaging app instead of through email. It is exactly what spam is, but delivered by a different door. A stranger's window pops open in the middle of your chat with a link to a website you never asked about — that is spim. The word is a noun, and like 'spam' it is uncountable: you get 'a lot of spim', not 'three spims'. It can also be used as a verb ('they spimmed everyone on the list'), and the person doing it is a 'spimmer'. The honest thing to tell you is that this word is not really alive. It was coined around 2003-2004, when desktop messaging programs like MSN Messenger and AIM were how everyone talked, and journalists needed a name for the flood of junk messages arriving there. Dictionaries picked it up. Then the world moved to LINE, WhatsApp and Messenger, and people simply went on calling the junk 'spam' wherever it appeared. So you will find spim in a dictionary and in articles from that period, but you will almost never hear a native speaker say it today, and many younger speakers have never met the word at all. Say 'spam' and everyone understands you. Knowing spim is useful mainly for reading — and as a small lesson in how a neat coinage can fail to take root.
