A spiderweb is the net of fine sticky threads a spider spins to catch flying insects — the flat round one with lines going out from the middle like bicycle spokes is the picture most people have, though spiders build messy sheet-shaped ones in corners too. It is written as one word, 'spiderweb', or as two, 'spider web'; both are fine, and British writers more often just say 'web' or 'cobweb'. There is a useful difference between 'web' and 'cobweb' that dictionaries do not always make clear: a web is the working thing, with a spider on it, while a cobweb is the old dusty abandoned one hanging in the corner of a room that you sweep away. So a horror film has cobwebs; a nature film has webs. Because a spiderweb is beautiful, delicate, and made of many lines joining at points, English uses it for anything with that shape or feel — cracks spreading across broken glass are 'a spiderweb of cracks', a city's small streets can be 'a spiderweb of alleys', and a plan that catches people is 'a web of lies'. Note that 'web' alone now most often means the internet — that use came from exactly this picture, threads connecting everything.
It goes back to Middle English spiþere webb — the same two words, just older spellings. 'Web' by itself is a very old English word meaning something woven, and it is related to 'weave'.
同家族的字
- cobwebShares 'web'. The 'cob' part is from an old word for spider, 'coppe' — so cobweb is literally the same idea, spider + web, built from an older word.
- weave'Web' comes from the same old root as 'weave' — a web is a woven thing.
- websiteShares 'web', named because the pages link to each other like threads.
