1. 1

Spherical means shaped like a ball — round in every direction, not just round like a coin. That last point is the whole word: a plate is round, an orange is spherical.

Spherical means shaped like a ballspherical 的意思是形狀像球一樣—— round in every direction, not just round like a coin每個方向都是圓的,不只是像硬幣那樣扁扁地圓。 That last point is the whole word最後那一點就是這個字的重點: a plate is round盤子是圓的(round), an orange is spherical橘子才是球形的(spherical)。

It is an adjective, and a fairly formal, technical one; you meet it in science and maths class (spherical mirror, spherical coordinates, the Earth is roughly spherical), in writing about machines and lenses, and in careful description. In everyday talk people simply say round, or say "it's like a ball".

It is an adjective, and a fairly formal, technical one它是一個形容詞,而且是偏正式、偏技術性的那種; you meet it in science and maths class (spherical mirror, spherical coordinates, the Earth is roughly spherical)你會在科學課、數學課上遇到它(spherical mirror球面鏡、spherical coordinates球座標、地球大致是 spherical), in writing about machines and lenses也會在講機械、鏡片的文章裡, and in careful description以及仔細的描述裡看到。 In everyday talk people simply say round日常聊天時,大家就簡單說 round(圓的), or say "it's like a ball"或說「它就像一顆球」。

Writers often it, because almost nothing is a perfect ball: nearly spherical, roughly spherical, more or less spherical. There is also a set phrase from science teaching, "a spherical cow", used as a joke about a model that is far too simple to be true — you do not need it, but if you meet it, that is what it means.

because almost nothing is a perfect ball因為幾乎沒有東西是完美的球體, Writers often soften it寫作的人常常會把語氣放軟: nearly spherical, roughly spherical, more or less sphericalnearly spherical幾乎是球形、roughly spherical大致是球形、more or less spherical差不多是球形。 There is also a set phrase from science teaching, "a spherical cow"另外,科學教學裡還有一個固定說法「a spherical cow」(球形的乳牛), used as a joke about a model that is far too simple to be true是拿來開玩笑,說一個模型簡化到太不真實—— you do not need it, but if you meet it, that is what it means你不需要特別記住它,但如果遇到了,這就是它的意思。
