1. 1

Spawning is what fish, frogs, and some other water animals do when they lay huge numbers of eggs, usually all at once, often traveling to a particular place to do it — 'spawning season' is the time of year this happens, and a 'spawning ground' is the place where it happens, like the exact stream where salmon return to lay their eggs. The word can also be used more figuratively for producing many things at once, especially copies or offspring of an original — 'the film spawned a dozen imitators.'
