The soya bean — the small pale bean that gives us , soy milk, soy sauce, miso and a great deal of animal feed and cooking oil. In British English the word usually appears attached to another noun: soya beans, soya milk, soya sauce, soya flour. American English drops the -a and says soy: soybeans, soy milk, soy sauce. Both are the same plant; it is purely a difference of country, and in the UK you now see both spellings on shop shelves because so much packaging is international. Note that "soya" on its own, without a following noun, is a little unusual and normally means the beans or the crop — a farmer talks about "growing soya", a does not ask for "a soya" but for "soya milk". Because so many people avoid dairy now, soya has also become a shorthand in cafés: "a with soya" is understood everywhere in Britain.
組成Borrowed through Dutch soja from Japanese — from the Satsuma dialect form soya of 醬油 (shōyu, soy sauce), which Japanese in turn took from Chinese 醬油: 醬 "bean paste" + 油 "oil". So the English word for the bean actually came from the name of the sauce, carried to Europe by Dutch traders.
