A very large urban area outside Johannesburg, South Africa, said "suh-WEH-toh". Under apartheid — the old legal system that separated people by race — black South Africans were not allowed to live in Johannesburg itself, though the city depended on their labour, so they were pushed into townships like this one and travelled in to work each day. Soweto grew into one of the largest black communities in the country. It is famous for what happened on 16 June 1976: schoolchildren marched in protest against being forced to study in Afrikaans rather than English, police opened fire, and the killings that followed — the photograph of dying schoolboy Hector Pieterson went around the world — turned local anger into an international campaign against apartheid. That day is now a public holiday in South Africa, Youth Day. Soweto is also where Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu both once lived, on the same street. Today it is an ordinary, busy, mixed place — homes, shops, restaurants, tourists — but for most people the name still carries 1976 in it, the way certain place names carry a date rather than a location.
