A waterproof hat for bad weather at sea. The shape is what defines it: the brim is short at the front so it does not block your eyes, and long at the back so rain runs off behind you instead of down your neck. It is made of oilskin or some other shiny waterproof cloth, and it is usually yellow in pictures — the fisherman on the fish-finger box is wearing one. Sailors, fishermen and lifeboat crews are the people who really wear them; on land you mainly see them on small children in rain gear, and in drawings, logos and stories about the sea. The word is a squeezed form of 'south-wester', the strong wet wind that blows from the south-west onto the coasts of Britain and Ireland. That same word still means the wind itself as well as the hat, so in older writing 'a sou'wester blew in from the Atlantic' is about weather, not headwear — you tell them apart by whether the thing is being worn or is doing the blowing. Say it 'sow-WESS-ter', with 'sow' rhyming with 'now'.
