Sorrento is a small town on the coast of southwest Italy, sitting on cliffs above the sea just south of Naples. It is one of the best-known holiday places in Italy, especially for British , who have been going there since the 1800s — so in British English the name carries a whole feeling with it: cliffs, lemon trees, the Bay of Naples, boats to Capri, the ruins of Pompeii nearby, and the mountain across the water. Because it is a place name, it takes a capital letter and no "the": you go to Sorrento, you stay in Sorrento. You will also meet it as a describing word in front of other words — a Sorrento hotel, Sorrento lemons, which are famous and huge and go into the limoncello. And you may meet the old song "Come Back to Sorrento", which is one of the most famous Italian songs in the world; if an English speaker mentions it with a smile, that song is usually the reason.
