Sorghum is a tall grain plant with a thick head of small round seeds at the top. It grows well where it is hot and dry, so it is a major food crop across Africa and India, and it is grown in the United States, Australia and China too. The seeds are eaten as porridge or ground into flour; the stalks feed animals; and one kind is boiled down into a dark sweet syrup, which is what Americans in the south mean when they say "sorghum" at breakfast. It is an uncountable noun, like rice or wheat: sorghum, not "a sorghum". For a student, there is a second door into this word. Sorghum is 高粱 — the grain that Kinmen's famous strong liquor is made from. So when you read "sorghum" in an English book about farming in Africa, and you have drunk 高粱酒 at a wedding, that is the same plant. It is a useful word in reading about food, farming, climate and drought, and almost never comes up in daily chat.
組成It came into English from the scientific Latin plant name Sorghum, taken from Italian sorgo. Behind that is a Latin word meaning "Syrian" — Europeans met the grain coming from the east, and named it after where they thought it came from.
