    In this sense, a solidus is the slanting line / — the mark you write in 'and/or', 'he/she', '24/7', or a web address. Its plural is 'solidi'. This is the formal, printing-trade name for it. In real life almost nobody says it: British speakers say 'stroke' (dial 5 stroke 2), Americans say 'slash', and computer people say 'forward slash' to separate it from the backslash \. 'Solidus' lives in style guides, typography books, and dictionaries — so it is a word you should be able to RECOGNISE rather than one you need to use. The mark itself does several jobs: it means 'or' (yes/no), it means 'per' (60 km/h), it divides dates (3/5/2026), it makes fractions (3/4), and it separates lines of poetry when quoted in a paragraph. Be aware the same spelling names other things, because the Latin word was a coin: a solidus was a gold coin of the late Roman Empire, and 'solidus' also had a technical use in chemistry. Those are different entries; here we mean the mark.
