The system of teaching music in which each note of the scale gets a short sung name — do, re, mi, fa, so, la, ti — instead of a letter or a position on the page. Sing those and you are doing sol-fa. The full name is 'tonic sol-fa', and the point of it is that the names move: 'do' is not fixed to one pitch but to whichever note the piece is built on, so a tune sounds the same in sol-fa whatever key it is played in. That makes it a tool for hearing and singing rather than for reading printed notes, which is why it is used so much with children and in choirs. It works as a noun ('she learned sol-fa at school'), and also as a verb, 'to sol-fa a tune' — to sing it using those . The system as English speakers know it was developed in the 1800s by John Curwen, building on much older Italian practice. Many people meet it first through 'Do-Re-Mi' in The Sound of Music without ever learning its name.
